In April 1942 Bath suffered three bombing attacks from the German Luftwaffe, part of the so-called ‘Baedeker Raids’ in which British towns of cultural importance were targeted by the German military in response to the Royal Air Force’s bombing of Lubeck and other German towns.
The Bath Blitz claimed more than 400 lives, left over a thousand buildings seriously damaged or destroyed and partially damaged 18,000 others.
