Sat 27 January at 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm GMT
This talk is organised by Avon Gardens Trust – £10 (members) £15 (guests) to include refreshments – book here through Try Booking.
Neo-Palladianism was a taste revolution; a movement that transformed much of the built environment in the eighteenth century. The style had an all-encompassing effect, leaving its mark on every aspect or art and taste at this time. There are many myths about neo-Palladianism, however perhaps the biggest myth is that it was the preserve of a single political party, the Whigs.
This talk examines these myths and explores more likely theories about the style and its effect on eighteenth century landscapes, along with the importance of societal connections for the dissemination and success of the style across England.
The talk will also explore the use of the landscape as a political canvas at this time, with the garden being used to demonstrate political affiliation and also a sense of political betrayal.
