‘The commons’ traditionally have been natural or cultural resources accessible to all members of a society, including resources such as air, water, and land held ‘in common’ even when owned privately or publicly. This might seem an old idea, but new tools enable infrastructure such as housing, land, water, community facilities and broadband to be brought into local common ownership more readily.
New mechanisms enable towns and cities to federate together to create the foundations for a new, community-owned economy, developed by local people to meet needs, and groups may obtain infrastructure without debt, or selling equity, so wealth stays in the local economy.
Dave Darby and Amrit Sachar from Stroud Commons share new ideas and developments in Stroud, and Dil Green from Mutual Credit Services expands on the philosophy of commons ideas.
