Big Read: Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Erika Giffard-Moore
Wed 11 September at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm BST
Free – £3.00Franz Kafka is widely regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature, but does he still have something to say about the society of today?
To mark the 100 year anniversary of Kafka’s death, BRLSI is featuring Kafka’s legacy, focusing on Metamorphosis, a book finished in 1912 and published in 1915. The introduction will explore various psychological, sociological, medical, anthropological and religious questions arising in Metamorphosis.
This session will be led by Erika Giffard-Moore and here’s some things to think about while you’re reading:
1. How has Gregor Samsa been transformed and into what he has been transformed?
2. Into what particular historical, social and political atmosphere did he wake up into and how did this affect his job as a travelling business man?
3. Was Gregor Samsa the only one who experienced metamorphosis?
4. How was Gregor perceived by his family?
5. Why did his family mistreat Gregor?
Big Read is an informal book discussion and is free for BRLSI members and students (only £3 for visitors) – you can register below or just come along on the day.
