Our Big Read for July is Mansfield Park by Jane Austen – come along to take part in our informal discussion, led by Diana White.

Mansfield Park is the home of Sir Thomas Bertram and into it comes little Fanny Price, his niece by marriage. Fanny’s life is difficult, thanks to the unkindness of her aunt, Mrs Norris, but is improved by Edmund, the younger son, whom she loves.

The arrival of Henry Crawford and his sister brings interest, but also serious problems; Fanny manages to remain calm and loyal through the various upsets, and is finally rewarded by marriage to Edmund.

Here’s a few things to think about whilst you’re reading:

1. Why did Jane Austen, whose father and brother were clergymen, make Edmund so vacillating?

2. Austen shows Fanny Price’s failings and, being fair, shows Mary Crawford’s strengths.

3. Jane Austen loved the theatre, so why did she make it a contentious issue in the book?

4. Why do you think Austen made Maria’s behaviour so scandalous?

5. Do you think Austen wanted to speak out against slavery?

Big Read is FREE for BRLSI members, you can register below or just turn up at 16 Queen Square at 11am on the day to join in the discussion.
