Wittgenstein: Rules and Justification in the Philosophical Investigations

January 4, 2024

Ludwig Wittgenstein’s treatment of rule-following in the Philosophical Investigations raised a number of debates in philosophy, from worries about how we know what we mean, to discussions about the possibility of inexpressible understanding. This discussion touches on many of the key themes throughout the Investigations such as the critique of the Augustinian view of language and the Private Language Argument and explores them to the fullest.

Emmanuel Campion-Dye aims to provide those less familiar with Wittgenstein a path into engaging with his later philosophy and provides those with greater familiarity a stimulating discussion of how radical we should take Wittgenstein to be.
