In this lively and wide-ranging conversation, Professor Ian Gadd interviews Professor Robert Morrison, author of the book “The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen, Napoleon, Lord Byron and the Making of the Modern World” 2019. They discuss the vast political, social, and cultural upheavals of the Regency period (1811-1820), and the many ways in which the people and events of this decade lay the foundation for our modern world. Topics include the excesses of the Prince Regent, the insights of Jane Austen, the hedonism of Lord Byron, and the innovative sports journalism of Pierce Egan, as well as the theatre, prize-fighting, the War of 1812, the sex trade, and the tragedies of the Peterloo Massacre.
