Through most of history sailors lived in fear of monsters of the deep. Giant squid, the kraken, beguiling mermaids and mermen, sea serpents and many more haunted the dreams of those ancient mariners.

The Beyond Beastly exhibition at the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution in Bath, UK, offers a peek into how some of those terrifying myths and legends may have come about.
