The main body (thallus) is attached in the centre and surrounded by pale grey lobes which have occasional white root-like structures (rhizines) on the underside. In the centre are bluish-grey granular patches (soredia) and sometimes white-rimmed blackish fruiting bodies (apothecia). It also grows on tree-trunks.
