Ludwig van Beethoven – ist er tatsächlich der beliebteste Komponist aller Zeit?  2021 hatte er 5 „Schläger“ in den ersten 20 in der Classic-FM Ruhmeshalle errungen. „Unwahrscheinlich!“ hätten seine Zeitgenossen gesagt. Woher kommt also sein Erfolg? Wie hat er seine zahlreichen Problemen, Hindernisse und Nachteile überwunden? Ist sein Geburtsjahr wichtig, sogar entscheidend? Wenn er früher oder später geboren wäre, hätte er es schaffen können? Und ist es wichtig oder nötig, etwas über seinen Lebenslauf zu wissen, um seine Werke besser (oder überhaupt!) zu verstehen oder zu genießen?

Jeremy Key-Pugh read French and German at Oxford University and spent nearly 40 years trying to impart his love of the cultures which those languages express to (often resistant) British teenagers. He was Head of Modern Languages at Kingswood School in Bath.
