Most publications state that Sham Castle was built by Ralph Allen to enhance the view from his town house – but there are several reasons that indicate that this was not the case.

The house now looks out onto a courtyard behind Topping & Company bookshop; but what could be seen in 1762, when the castle was said to have been built? If the castle was not an eyecatcher for the house, what was its purpose and how did this tale start?

This talk by Mike Macklin will present evidence to let you decide on one of Bath’s enduring stories!

Mike Macklin moved to Bath 30 years ago. Since retirement he has developed his interest in local history and is a member of the History of Bath Research Group and the Larkhall History Society, and takes free walking tours around the city as a Mayor’s Guide.
