Ready to take your next journey of Discovery? The Renaissance: Journeys of Discovery at BRLSI is a yearlong programme of talks and events exploring the many joys, revelations and something of the broader cultural legacy of a movement still making waves in the 21st century.  Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Martin Luther, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Chaucer, Machiavelli, Hieronymus Bosch, if you love culture then you’ll love our talks series!

So how did Renaissance ideas have their roots beyond Europe? Over 2,500 years ago, ideas from the East began flowing into Europe. Some of the more traceable influences came during the Ottoman period, when the vast empire that spanned both Europe and Asia around the Mediterranean facilitated cultural and intellectual exchange. Trade routes – whether overland across the deserts of Central Asia or by sea from Italy to Scandinavia – carried not only goods, but also knowledge, often transmitted through Persian translations.

By the 12th century, figures in Italy, such as Fibonacci of Pisa, were introducing new concepts that reshaped thought. These ideas changed how creation and knowledge were perceived, with Catholic priests in Portugal and Spain preserving and disseminating them. From there, knowledge spread further north into Flanders, the Netherlands and Germany. By the 18th century, ideas were being put into practice, sparking the Industrial Revolution and laying the foundations for the British Empire.
