BRLSI Big Read: Sense & Sensibility
Led by Penelope Ruddock
Wed 13 March
11:00 am - 12:00 pm GMT
Free – £4.00Sign up for the BRLSI Big Read on Sense & Sensibility, the first of Jane Austen’s novels to be published.
The novel explores how the contemporary ideals of ‘sense’ and ‘sensibility’ (rationality as opposed to romanticism) affect the conduct and love affairs of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. Austen’s empathy and wit make this an absorbing read – a novel of both comedy and tragedy.
This session will be led by Penelope Ruddock, and the discussion points are as follows:
1. What role does money play in the plot?
2. Is this a novel about broken promises?
3. Does Jane Austen value ‘sense’ over ‘sensibility’?
4. Will Marianne & Colonel Brandon have a happy marriage?
5. Does Lucy Steele get what she deserves?
Big Read is FREE to BRLSI members, and non-members are also very welcome (tickets £4). It’s helpful for us to know how many people are coming, so please register below if possible or come into 16 Queen Square in advance to register or buy your ticket.
