Ever wanted to join a bookclub where you know and love every book on the list! Then the BRLSI Big Read might be for you. Each month we take a classic and share it with likeminded friends who might want to savour it once again. Texts featured in the BRLSI Big Read have included The Great Gatsby, The Age of Innocence, The Pursuit of Love, Mrs Dalloway, Rogue Male, Beware of Pity, and Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet.

Each Big Read Session lasts approximately one hour, and revolves around a 20 minute introduction of the novel by the session leader, before opening out to a wider discussion with the rest of the group. This time up it’s Jane Austen’s Persuasion. In a week where a young penitent was instructed to read Austen as a mandatory part of his two-year suspended sentence, do we believe classic literature can really make you better?
