World Affairs Group meeting raises £211 for Haiti disaster relief

The BRLSI World Affairs Group’s has donated £211, the proceeds of its January meeting, to the UK Charities Disaster Emergency Committee for its work in Haiti – see below for full story.
World Affairs Group to donate lecture proceeds to Haiti Disaster Emergency Committee

BRLSI World Affairs Group co-convenor Geoff Catchpole (right) has announced that all the door money (and any other donations) collected at the group’s lecture on Monday 18th January will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee, an umbrella group for 13 of the UK’s leading relief charities, to assist their work in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.
The lecture is entitled Rediscovering The Common Wealth, and will examine the differences between individual self interest and the long-term common good. The speaker is Professor Geof Wood, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bath University. Prof Wood, who has over 40 years experience of teaching and research in South Asia and has just returned from Bangladesh, has helped with previous disaster relief appeals at BRLSI, including the one following the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.
The Disaster Emergency Committee’s members includes Oxfam, Save the Children, ActionAid and the British Red Cross.
