Working Women in Music: Dolly Parton & Clara Schumann
A talk looking at two extraordinary women who changed the face of music across three centuries.
Clara Schumann and Dolly Parton were both child stars who as adults reshaped their male-dominated musical worlds. In the nineteenth century, Clara Schumann was not only the first female musician to make her mark in classical music, but she also changed the focus of the concert recital into what it is today. In the twentieth century, Dolly Parton battled to win her independence in the world of country music to become a singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist without parallel. We look at the battles these women faced and the impact their victories have made.
