This talk honours the heroic women of the Commonwealth who went to war and the impact of the women’s wartime organisations they were involved with.

From codebreakers at Bletchley Park to Jamaican radio operators, Indian naval officers, Black women in the Land Army, pilots in the ATA, resistance fighters like Violette Szabo, and Singapore’s Elizabeth Choy who endured torture for helping POWs.

All these heroic stories show the breadth and diversity of women’s service. Victory was not only won on the battlefield, but also through the determination and resilience of women whose stories need to be remembered.

Anita St. John Gray is a trustee of the Royal Commonwealth Society, Bath and District Branch.
