This six-week course invites participants to rediscover drawing as an open, exploratory practice.

Many people believe drawing is about accuracy, realism, and “getting it right”. This course challenges that assumption and offers a liberating alternative: drawing as a way of thinking, experimenting, and making visual work using a wide range of materials and approaches.

Each week, the course will introduce the work of a contemporary artist whose practice expands what drawing can be. These case studies will show how drawing can involve abstraction, mark-making, layering, collage, erasure, repetition and chance processes. Participants will be encouraged to see drawing as any process that creates a visually engaging surface.

Practical sessions will combine short demonstrations and independent exploration. You will experiment with graphite, ink, charcoal, coloured media, found materials, and different papers and surfaces. You will be encouraged to bring materials you enjoy using too.

No previous drawing experience is required: the emphasis is on curiosity, play, and personal discovery rather than technical mastery. Those with more experience will also find opportunities to extend their practice in new directions.

The course is designed to build confidence and to help participants develop their own visual language. By the end of the six weeks, you will have produced a small collection of experimental work and gained a broader understanding of contemporary art and drawing practices.

Whether you are a complete beginner, an artist seeking fresh approaches, or simply curious about how artists think, this course offers a supportive, stimulating environment in which to explore and experiment!

Jane, an RCA graduate (1980), worked in design and publishing before training as an art teacher in 2001. She retired from full-time teaching in 2020 but continues to teach and support creativity through online and in-person classes across the UK.

Her practice spans drawing, watercolour, mixed media and ceramics, combining close observation of nature with an abstract, materials-focused approach influenced by Arte Povera. Her work explores everyday objects, transformation, and the beauty of change and decay.
