Two monsoons: this was often the life-span of Britons in India before they succumbed to illness, warfare or accident – just two years. Their graves lie wherever the East India Company set foot. Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones will tell the story of the British experience in the Indian sub-continent by focussing on civilian graves and memorials to officers of the East India Company and their families and those working after 1858 for the British Raj.
Dr Rosie Llewellyn-Jones MBE is an authority on colonial India and a prolific author. She read Urdu at the School of Oriental & African Studies and has led tour groups in northern India and Bengal. She is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Royal Society for Asian Affairs. She has edited BACSA’s journal, Chowkidar, which means watchman, for many years.
BACSA (The British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia was set up half a century ago to care for them and record what remains. Often architecturally striking, they are now part of South Asia’s own history.
