Elusive but gorgeous, the male Purple Emperor Butterly is much sought after by nature watchers in southern England. While its appearance is lovely its habits are much less so: it is a thug of the butterfly world, attacking anything that flies nearby. It is attracted to feed on material that smells awful to human nostrils and its preferred habitat high in tree cover makes it hard to spot.
Matthew Oates, author of His Imperial Majesty, a natural history of the Purple Emperor sheds new light on this fascinating creature.
This is a Bath Natural History Society talk – no booking required, £3 admission on the door.
