Faberge and the Firebird: Cultural Exchange and the European Avant-Garde in the 20th Century

This illustrated lecture follows the last phase of Russia’s artistic journey.  By the beginning of the twentieth century, Russian culture had come of age. The intense preoccupation with national destiny gave way to a creative explosion during which Russian artists, writers and composers entered into dialogue with their Western European counterparts, and were recognised for the first time as equals.  Carl Fabergé opened a branch of his Petersburg jewellery business in London, while the daring commissions resulting from Sergei Shchukin’s visits to Matisse electrified the young Russian avant-garde when they were hung in his Moscow home.  Diaghilev’s long crusade to win recognition for Russian culture abroad was crowned in 1913 with the Ballets Russes premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring – a spectacular end to an extraordinary journey.
