BRLSI ANNUAL SHAKESPEARE CELEBRATIONS IN TANDEM WITH THE BATH SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY!

The second BRLSI Big Read of 2021 is Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell and BRLSI are delighted that leading the discussion will be Peter Davies from the Bath Shakespeare Society who will guide the hour-long discussion and kick off a day of events celebrating the Bard’s birthday!
The novel is inspired by the little-known story behind what might be the most famous play in history, Hamlet. The death of Hamnet the eleven-year-old son of William Shakespeare in 1596, just four years before Shakespeare writes perhaps his most famous play, lies at the heart of this novel which explores themes of grief and the devastating impact loss places upon a marriage. The novel also explores the wider theme of the bond between twins Hamnet and Judith, and any reader of Shakespeare will know that twinship is probably the most recurrent motif in his work. Winner of the 2020 women’s prize for fiction, if you haven’t read Hamnet already then now is the perfect time to do so.
This live zoom session will begin at 11am and participants are encouraged to log on at 10.50am so that the session can begin promptly. Peter Davies will lead the discussion for 20 minutes before opening the floor for group discussion. All participants will be sent 5 questions on Hamnet the week before the session takes place.
Big Read Sessions are free to BRLSI and Bath Shakespeare Society members and £4.00 to visitors and if you have not joined BRLSI already then here is your perfect excuse to do so!
