The Democracy under Threat series gets to the very roots of democratic principles and practices, daring to ask the big questions.

What is democracy? If voters are feeling apathy to such an extent that they can’t get out to vote, are meaningful alternatives available? Is free speech a non-negotiable? Could direct democracy work? Is a deliberate strategy at play to keep the electorate satisfied and stupefied? Should we extend voting rights?

To mark the close of our Democracy Under Threat conference, a panel of speakers including Wera Hobhouse MP, Thom Oliver (Senior Lecturer in Politics UWE) Andreas Wasmuht (Chair of World Affairs, BRLSI) and Paul Jackson (Organiser of the Democracy Under Threat Series) identify the current threats to democracy both at home and abroad and ask what remedies are at hand, if any, to help ameliorate current problems within our democratic systems.
