The reign of King Edgar (943-975) is often regarded as a ‘golden age’ before the return of the Vikings and the disasters that befell the English during the reign of his son, Æthelred II (‘the Unready’). Although his reign started in division and political crisis, following the split of the kingdom of the English between Edgar and his older brother Eadwig, it saw the consolidation of English governance and lordship across most of England, significant legislative reforms, ‘monastic reform’ and significant cultural and artistic achievement. So, if this reign was so successful why did it pave way for such a disastrous one?

Join Dr Charles Insley, Senior Lecturer in Medieval History, University of Manchester to find out!
