When flights all over the country suddenly get cancelled, what’s the first question we ask ourselves? From the NHS to the Electoral Commission, many key British institutions have by now been victims of sophisticated cyber-attacks. Some of them perpetrated by criminals for profit, while others have been undertaken by or on behalf of states. Cyber operations are now part and parcel of how states interact, and governments across the world must come up with initiatives that provide forums for them to come together and discuss the issues. This event brings together academics, civil society, and former officials to discuss what is cyber-diplomacy exactly, and why it matters. What are the key issues on the table? An important discussion for anyone interested in the future of democracy.

This event is organised in partnership with the University of Bath, and it is part of the Bath Global Chair, EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security (TIPS-at-scale), Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour, and the Future Politics Research Group activities.

David Galbreath is Professor of War and Technology at the University of Bath and Deputy Director of the Bath Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour. His research is on how technology shapes militaries, operations and outcomes. Most recently, he was funded by the Australian Army to deliver a research project on the digital security of Battle Management Systems. He is also former editor of the European Journal of International Security, Defence Studies and European Security.
