The friendship between Benjamin Franklin and William Strahan was one of the most significant relationships of the Enlightenment. What began as a business connection across the Atlantic Ocean between two aspiring printers, evolved into a deep, affectionate family bond which included Benjamin’s son, William, when the Franklins arrived in London in 1757.
William Franklin’s illegitimate son, Temple, was placed in Strahan’s care when William Franklin was appointed Royal Governor of New Jersey. He was schooled by Strahan’s brother-in-law, the eccentric educationalist James Elphinston. These close family ties were severely tested during and after the American Revolution.
Marie-Louise Luxemburg is a writer and historian, and former BRLSI convenor for History & Culture. She has frequently spoken on Literary and Historical subjects.
