SUMMARY:Why Freud Still Matters - The Talking Cure in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:People come to therapy when something no longer works\, hoping that someone who is “supposed to know” will listen and help them return to a time when things did work. In this talk\, psychoanalyst Christos Tombras revisits Sigmund Freud’s great invention\, the “Talking Cure”\, tracing its development from 19th-century studies of hysteria and early attempts at hypnosis\, to today’s world pushing for quantifiable\, clear-cut solutions to problems that are assumed to be equally quantifiable and clear-cut. \nDrawing on Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan\, Tombras argues that while the mind is a product of the brain\, it cannot be reduced to mere neurology; instead\, it comprises complex networks of psychic events shaped by language — not as a neutral system of meanings\, but as a material force that structures experience from the outside in. The singularity of a patient’s history and experience is too often overlooked — a real challenge for modern “evidence-based” clinical practice. Ultimately\, the talk asks what the Talking Cure can still offer in a century that would rather scan the brain than listen to the patient. \nChristos Tombras\, PhD\, is a London-based Lacanian supervising psychoanalyst and lecturer with a special interest in continental philosophy and its dialogue with psychoanalysis\, about which he has written and presented extensively. He has a background in experimental\, non-narrative cinema. His most recent book is False Negatives: Tilted Takes on a World in Flux (L2U Publishing\, 2025); His latest film is Three Colours (30 mins\, 2024). \nDaniel Jeffreys and Sayuri Higashi tell you more about what you can expect on the day: \n \n

SUMMARY:Grief in an age of Loss
DESCRIPTION:The next in our The Unsettled Mind: Psychoanalysis in the Age of Anxiety series explores the subject of Grief. \nGrief is messy\, non-linear\, and utterly unique to you. But why does the culture offer so little structured support? \nMeghan Riordan Jarvis has created an approach to grief that is built on neuroscience\, bioscience\, grief and trauma theories\, cultural wisdom and ritual. Her powerful approach offers transformative concepts and techniques that help process pain\, rediscover your identity\, and find unexpected meaning. She has built her entire career on a single\, radical act — telling people the truth about grief when everyone else in their life is too scared to.  \nA licensed psychotherapist and trauma specialist with twenty years of clinical practice\, Meghan knows grief from both sides of the therapy room. After losing both of her parents and developing PTSD\, she stopped pretending she had all the answers and started writing about what she actually knew. The result was two books that have changed the way readers understand loss: the memoir End of the Hour (Zibby Books\, 2023) and the clinical guide Can Anyone Tell Me? (Sounds True\, 2024). \nFind out more! \n \nGrief in an age of Loss \n \n  \nBio \nMeghan is also the host of Grief is My Side Hustle\, the creator of the Grief M.E.N.T.O.R Method\, a two-time TEDx speaker\, and the founder of the GRIEFTASTIC Book Fair. Alongside she teaches at Kripalu and The Omega Institute and consults with Fortune 500 companies including Lululemon\, Pinterest\, and Johnson & Johnson on building emotionally fluent workplaces.  \nImage: Nasjonalmuseet/Høstland\, Børre \nhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ \n

SUMMARY:The only cure: Freud revisited
DESCRIPTION:Few figures in psychology have been as influential—or as controversial—as Sigmund Freud. For decades many of his ideas were dismissed as speculative and unscientific. Yet developments in modern neuroscience have prompted a surprising reassessment.  \n\nIn this lecture\, eminent neuroscientist\, best-selling author and Freud editor Mark Solms revisits Freud’s theory of mind in the light of contemporary brain science\, arguing that psychoanalytic therapy is proving to be among our most effective medical treatments of any kind. He will explore what neuroscience now reveals about the unconscious\, the emotional foundations of mental life\, and the mechanisms through which talking therapies can alleviate psychological suffering. \nDrawing on recent clinical research and his latest book The Only Cure – Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing\, Solms will examine how “the talking cure” compares with drug treatment\, and why psychonalysis should resume its position as the most cohenrent and comprehensive theory of the mind. He will also consider why Freud and psychoanalysis have remained so fiercely debated for more than a century.  \n\nMark Solms is Director of Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town\, Science Director of the American Psychoanalytic Association and editor of the new Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud.

SUMMARY:James Cowles Prichard: early Victorian ideas on psychiatry & anthropology
DESCRIPTION:During the autumn of 1800\, adolescent James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) spent several weeks in Bath\, watching his affluent father’s gout-swollen limbs gradually recover.  Dr Prichard would become Britain’s premier psychiatric theorist of international repute and a national Commissioner in Lunacy.  He published textbooks on neurology and psychiatry and their jurisprudence\, advocating the humane treatment of the insane and challenging the would-be science of phrenology.  \nPrichard is also remembered as the founder of British anthropology.  From 1813 until mid-century\, his many strikingly illustrated publications on the science of humankind sought to demonstrate the single origin and physical and psychological unity of the human race at a time when there was a growing pernicious belief in the existence of multiple human species.   \nWhen not dosing and bleeding his patients\, Prichard was also busy publishing books on epidemics\, biological theory\, Egyptology and linguistics.  Dedicated to promoting science and education\, he was a stalwart of the Bristol Philosophical and Literary Society at the Bristol Institution\, an organisation somewhat less successful than its sister BRLSI!  \nMargaret M. Crump is an independent scholar in nineteenth-century British intellectual and cultural history\, and arts educator and artist in Bristol\, United Kingdom.  Copies of her recently published James Cowles Prichard of the Red Lodge: A Life of Science During the Age of Improvement (UNP) will be on sale at £24.

SUMMARY:On the couch: from Picasso to Putin
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, author and psychoanalyst Andrew Jamieson focuses on the internal world of Pablo Picasso and Nelson Mandela via Freud and Jung’s accounts of the unconscious\, introducing the ideas behind his new book On the Couch: 20 Extraordinary Personalities from Picasso to Putin.  \nThrough vivid portraits of artists\, politicians and cultural icons\, Jamieson’s new book brings to life key psychoanalytic concepts — from splitting and narcissism to trauma\, ambition and the hunger for recognition — showing how early emotional patterns can echo through adult character and public behaviour. \nThe evening will conclude with a conversation and audience discussion with psychoanalyst Daniel Jeffreys\, drawing on his experience of political and media worlds\, including past interviews with Donald Trump\, to explore what psychoanalysis can tell us about leadership\, creativity and the challenging times in which we live.  \nAndrew Jamieson is a psychotherapist based in Bath whose interests include psychotherapy’s interconnection with philosophy\, music\, and literature. He is the author of Midlife – Humanities Secret Weapon (published by Notting Hill Editions). Parallel to his psychotherapeutic career\, Jamieson has promoted orchestral concerts throughout the UK for over 40 years.

SUMMARY:What is evolutionary psychology?
DESCRIPTION:Darwin’s theory of evolution transformed biology. It is now considered the foundation of all life sciences. \nHowever\, its application to psychology has not been so universally accepted. This talk will explore why and consider whether psychology should be treated as a branch of the life sciences. \nAs a useful test case for the utility of evolutionary ideas in psychology\, the talk will focus on human mating. How much has evolution shaped how humans mate\, and how much has culture loosened any such biological bonds? \nDr Ed Morrison\, Senior Lecturer Portsmouth University

SUMMARY:A C Grayling - Making peace in the culture wars
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Victor Suchar Christmas Lecture\nA C Grayling’s book Discrimination: Making Peace in the Culture Wars takes the so-called “woke” side – but argues that that the “woke” case is not best made by visiting the same oppressions on opponents as the latter have historically visited on minorities\, women and people of alternative views and ways. \nThe key to the case is that culture conflict arises not between competing rights\, but between interests and rights\, that genuine and fully enacted respect for rights is the way to end discrimination of all kinds\, and that the resulting situation would in the ideal be one of convivencia. \nProfessor A C Grayling\, CBE\, MA\, DPhil (Oxford)\, FRSL\, FRSA\, Master of the New College of the Humanities and a Supernumerary Fellow of St Anne’s College\, Oxford \nNon-member tickets on sale 1.8.25 – to become a member of BRLSI and get access to early-release and reduced rate tickets\, go to our membership page here.

SUMMARY:Shamanism in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:Shamanism has long been a popular theme among anthropologists. Now\, with the growth of cognitive archaeology in recent decades\, a new conversation has begun connecting past and present in Neolithic societies. When this extends into the Palaeolithic\, evolutionary psychology and genetics can also join this conversation about the advent and distribution of shamanism. The road less travelled\, however\, is to extend these enquiries forward in time\, through Neolithic cultures into Bronze Age and Axial Age civilisations. \nThis talk will reconsider evidence from more familiar cultures and their key texts\, attempting to connect these with the conversations about shamanism. Classic texts from Archaic\, Classical and Hellenistic Greece\, contemporary texts from India and China\, and some from the Bronze Age civilisations will be examined in the light of these investigations. In what sense could all ancient cultures be described as shamanistic? \nRichard Valentine\, researcher & author

SUMMARY:Free Radicals! Thomas Beddoes\, Humphrey Davy and the Pneumatic Institute of Bristol
DESCRIPTION:At the very end of eighteenth century\, the distinguished Oxford chemist Dr Thomas Beddoes founded a new private medical research clinic\, The Pneumatic Institute\, where together with his brilliant assistant Humphrey Davy\, he administered experimental treatment of volunteers and medical patients with the psychedelic gas nitrous oxide. Seeking to cure chronic diseases\, they instead discovered that the gas had remarkable effects on the mind. Davy was fascinated and although he dubbed the treatment “laughing gas”\, he took it much more seriously than that. \nThe astonishing story of this short–lived\, but immensely influential\, medical research institute involves a stellar cast of characters: from the socialite and political hostess Georgiana\, Duchess of Devonshire\, to the scientists James Watt and Erasmus Darwin\, not to mention the poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey. \nMike Jay is an author specialising in psychedelics and the history of drugs. He has published many books on this subject. Mike’s book Free Radicals will be published in the UK by Yale University Press in June. He writes regularly for the London Review of Books and the New York Review of Books. You can read about his work by visiting his website https://mikejay.net/ \n \nThere will be book sales and signings with Mike after the talk. \n  \nStuart Reynolds is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of Bath and is convenor of the BRLSI Science group. \n

SUMMARY:How to test the paranormal
DESCRIPTION:How do we test the paranormal? Although the main research focus of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit in the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths\, University of London\, is the development and\, where possible\, testing of non-paranormal explanations of ostensibly paranormal experiences\, they have devoted considerable time and effort to directly testing paranormal claims. This talk presents an overview of how we test psychic ability and mediumship\, “human magnetism”\, dowsing\, and precognitive dreams.
