SUMMARY:Live Shakespeare transformed for the screen
DESCRIPTION:Our annual Shakespeare’s birthday celebratory event! \nThis talk will take you on a journey through the backstage and offscreen arena where decisions are made that reshape theatrical productions of Shakespeare’s plays for a present-day audience. \nThe talk will pay particular attention to examples where broadcast technologies aim to remain invisible to screen audiences in order to produce a sense of theatrical immersion.  \nAs per tradition we will also be raising a glass and having a slice of cake to celebrate the Bard’s 462nd birthday! \nPascale Aebischer\, Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Performance Studies at the University of Exeter.  Her books include Shakespeare’s Violated Bodies: Stage and Screen Performance (Cambridge 2004)\, Screening Early Modern Drama: Beyond Shakespeare (Cambridge 2020) and Viral Shakespeare: Performance in the Time of Pandemic (Cambridge 2021).

SUMMARY:Team Shakespeare: Shakespeare’s dramatic collaborations
DESCRIPTION:We tend to think of Shakespeare as the singular genius\, but he chose a form of writing that was always collaborative: with actors\, with audiences\, and\, more often than you might think\, with other dramatists too. This talk will cover some recent work on Shakespeare as a collaborator and discuss what difference it might make to the way we think about his achievement and reputation. \nThe talk will be followed by a celebratory toast and a slice of our traditional Shakespeare’s birthday cake! \nEmma Smith is Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Oxford. Her recent book This is Shakespeare was a Sunday Times bestseller; Portable Magic: A History of Books and their Readers was shortlisted for the Wolfson Prize in 2023. She was the Sam Wanamaker Fellow at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2023 and served as a consultant for BBC televisions’s three-part series Shakespeare: Rise of a Genius.  She is editing Twelfth Night for the Arden Shakespeare\, and working on a new book on Elizabethan artistic culture. Her new BBC Radio 4 series on books during the second world war will be broadcast in the summer for the 80th anniversary of 1945.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare’s Birthday Lecture: By the Mass
DESCRIPTION:Was Shakespeare a secret Roman Catholic? How can we tell? \nThe religious context of Shakespeare’s lifetime was – to say the least – turbulent. Just before the start of his writing career\, England was shocked by the execution of Mary Queen of Scots\, and\, in the following year\, the threat of the Spanish Armada. In 1605\, the whole government and Royal family narrowly escaped assassination by the Gunpowder Plot. In what ways do Shakespeare’s plays reflect the religious issues of his time? Join the annual Bath Shakespeare Society Shakespeare Birthday Lecture to find out! \nThe talk will be followed by a celebratory toast and a slice of our traditional Shakespeare’s birthday cake! \nPeter Davies \n

SUMMARY:The Publication of Shakespeare’s First Folio\, 1623
DESCRIPTION:This lectures celebrates the 400th anniversary of one of the most important books ever\, Shakespeare’s First Folio. The lecture is jointly organised by the Bath Shakespeare Society and the Literature & Humanities Convenor Group of BRLSI. \nWhy is Shakespeare’s First Folio still considered to be one of the most important books ever printed\, four hundred years on? Professor Ian Gadd of Bath Spa University will help answer this by introducing us to its editors\, printers\, and publishers\, and explaining how it was printed\, published\, marketed\, and sold. He will also consider its literary and cultural legacy\, especially as it is the only source for plays such as The Tempest\, As You Like It\, Measure for Measure\, Twelfth Night\, Macbeth\, Julius Caesar\, and Anthony and Cleopatra.  \nIan Gadd is Professor of English Literature at Bath Spa University\, where he is also the Director of the Global Academy of Liberal Arts\, an international network of universities\, and Head of Development for European Projects\, overseeing EU-funded collaborations. He is also Chair of the Board of Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution. \nImage showing Shakespeare’s coat of arms courtesy of Bodleian Library

SUMMARY:Shakespeare & Europe
DESCRIPTION:Every year we join with the Bath Shakespeare Society to celebrate the Bard’s birthday. \nThis year’s celebratory lecture will be on the subject of: \nShakespeare and Europe\nSpeaker: Graham Billing MA (Oxon) \nThis happy breed of men\, this little world\,\nThis precious stone set in a silver sea\nWhich serves it in the office of a wall\,\nOr as a moat defensive to a house\,\nAgainst the envy of less happier lands …\nRichard II: Act 2 Sc 1 \nThus\, John of Gaunt\, an old man on his deathbed\, reflects on the joy and privilege of being English. But what was Shakespeare’s view of other European countries? After all\, only one third of his plays are set in England\, and the majority of his characters are not English. \nYou can come to Queen Square or watch online (but you’ll miss out on the cake!)\, please select the correct ticket when booking.
