Dr Gerald Hull, University of Wales
The 1850s saw moral and legal re-assessments of the position of women within and outside marriage which were often led by writers such as Elizabeth Gaskell (Ruth and ‘Lizzie Leigh’) and later, George Eliot, Meredith and Thomas Hardy. Marriage Acts in 1857/8, court cases and the work of European commentators and artists underlined and exploited the vulnerabilities Gaskell brilliantly recognised.
