'An empire of oceans: Britain's empire and the world's oceans'

At its height, the British Empire encompassed a quarter of the world’s land area. For most of its history, however, it was concerned with oceans, seas and maritime routes of commerce and communication.

This talk considers British commercial, military and scientific activities in the major oceans of the world in the Age of Sail.
