Details

Frederick Marryat was an experienced naval officer before he took up a career as a novelist of the maritime way of life.

Mr Midshipman Easy, written in 1836, is a stirring tale from the days of sail and wooden battleships, and recounts a philosophical young man’s initiation into the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, and his time as a crew member with the renowned Cochrane, Britannia's sea-wolf.
Based on the novelist’s experiences sailing under the command of a real-life model for Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey, it combines adventure, humour and insight.
