Emma. Lady Hamilton was a woman ahead of her time. With her renowned beauty, she rose from humble beginnings to become muse of the painter Romney, and soon gained an entrée to high society.
In 1791 Emma married Sir William Hamilton, the British Envoy to Naples. Sir William was a great collector of antiquities and beautiful objects, and treated Emma as another acquisition. As wife of the British Envoy to Naples, Emma entertained Nelson in 1793, and the couple soon became lovers. Their affair seems to have been tolerated by the elderly Sir William, who showed nothing but admiration and respect for Nelson. The three lived together openly,
