The Circular Economy

10 January 2017    The Circular Economy  Dr Ben Davies, Bath Spa University

In the space of just a few years, the circular economy has risen from a topic of purely academic interest to becoming a strategic goal for increasing numbers in commercial businesses, third sector organisations and the public sector.

The concept of an economic system that productively generates new value streams from its own waste products, and creatively redesigns its outputs to reduce and ultimately eliminate the very concept of material and energetic ‘waste’ itself, has many attractive aspects.

This talk explored the prospects and challenges of a circular economy, in particular considering its radical re-thinking of conventional business models, challenges to both consumer and producer expectations over ‘business as usual’, and some of the social and economic conditions needed to support a transition towards a circular economy in the future.
