Richard Hoggart (1918-2014), a critic and teacher who was a passionate advocate of literary values, is forever associated with his 1957 book The Uses of Literacy. This was an ambitious analysis of British working class culture and reading habits. Hoggart was born into poverty in Leeds, but rose through the system by natural ability. This talk will look at his life in the context of changing times in the twentieth century.
