The Gaskell Society South West: Victorian Literature and Culture
The Gaskell Society South West was founded in the early 1990s by Rosemary Marshall and Prof Peter Skrine. Following their retirement in 2009,five current members took on the responsibilities of organising an active programme of lectures, discussion groups and social occasions. Two public lectures each year have been taking place at BRLSI which are open to all. The next one will be on Saturday, the 22nd of June, 2019 at 2.30 pm and will be on Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens and the 19th Century Railways in Britain.
The remit of the Society is to cover broad topics on Victorian subjects, which includes other Victorian authors and cultural themes as well as the books and stories of Elizabeth Gaskell. A recent lecture was on The Governess in Victorian Society.
