BRLSI Engineering & Technology - The Moulton Bicycle

Date Description
04 July 2018

Dan Farrell, Chief Engineer, Moulton Bicycle Company, Bradford-on-Avon

In 1962, buoyed by the success of his rubber cone suspension on the BMC Mini, Alex Moulton launched the Moulton bicycle. With its small wheels and open frame, it was an instant hit and became an icon of the ‘swinging sixties’. In 1983 the Moulton was re-introduced as ‘the advanced engineering bicycle’ and is still manufactured in Bradford on Avon today. Dan Farrell recounts the story of what Norman Foster acclaimed as ‘the greatest work of twentieth century British design’, an example of which is even held at the New York Museum of Modern Art.
