BRLSI Patrick O'Brian Society - Ropes and Ropemaking

Date Description
25 June 2018

Group Book Discussion

Even a small 24-gun frigate like the surprise had over 20 miles of running and standing rigging, all run up from the Admiralty's 100 fathoms standard rope length (600 feet, or 1 cable), some of which were 20 inches in circumference and required nearly the whole ship's company to handle.

Europa of the Somerset Knotters will be giving the Society an account, not only of rope manufacture (the ropewalk at Chatham dockyard is (still) over 1,300 feet long), but also of the skill, seamanship and sheer hard graft that went into managing a fully rigged sailing ship in Nelson's navy.
