The invention of the balloon was an almost inevitable consequence of the progress of science in the eighteenth century, including the discovery that there were different kinds of “air” and the abandonment of the phlogiston theory. This elegant form of flight was almost forgotten in the middle of the twentieth century until new developments in America led to a revival and an expansion of new possibilities.
