Dr Karen Wallis Artist in Residence at the recently televised Ness of Brodgar excavations in Orkney

During her residency on Orkney observing the everyday process of archaeology, Dr Wallis was especially interested in its connections to human activity in the past. Using sketchbook drawing and pleinair painting, combined with sound recordings, she is constructing a record in film to evoke a sense of being on the site. Her aim is to find a way for perceptual observations to contribute to the archaeological research. These interactions with archaeology reveal vivid and vital ongoing connections between this prehistoric cultural capital and our modern world.

Dr Karen Wallis lectures and exhibits extensively in Bristol, Bath and area, and held Artistic Residencies at Bath’s Holburne Museum, Fairfield House and at the Bristol RWA.
