We are used to thinking about the European Union as a political project. However, the history of its idea has its origins not in international politics but cosmopolitan philosophy, and in particular the projection of a European ‘pacific federation’ in the writings of Immanuel Kant. This lecture will explore these philosophical roots and assess their relevance to the still faltering political project we see today.
