Description

Upper Jurassic, Kimmeridge Clay
Solenhofen
Bavaria
Germany
M2228
Description:

A pair of articulated aptychi (singular aptychus), part of the jaw apparatus of an ammonite. In the past the interpreted function of this structure was controversial and some interpreted the aptychi as an operculum, a guard for closing the ammonites body aperture, this is no longer a common interpretation. This fossil is from the famous Solnhofen Limestone in Germany. The Solnhofen Limestone is what is known as a Konservat-Lagerst_tten; a German term literally meaning
Moore, C.
