Two Different Literary Marriages - Elizabeth Gaskell & Frances Trollope

23 November 2019

Dr Lambert will discuss two nineteenth century marriages and their impact on the lives of these important women writers. For Frances Trollope her marriage and her relationship with her family was complex and led to much of her writing being virtually unknown today despite the fact that she was one of the nineteenth century’s most popular authors.

Mrs. Gaskell’s ‘literary marriage’ to Charles Dickens developed while contributing to his periodicals and led ultimately to an acrimonious divorce.
