Healthy rivers flow. Most rivers don’t. Nowhere is this more evident than in Europe, where a century old legacy of weirs and other barriers has resulted in a widespread loss of connectivity.
This talk shows how the AMBER project (Adaptive Management of Barriers in European Rivers) is revealing the true extent of river fragmentation and helping managers reconnect rivers across Europe.
To increase connectivity one first needs to halt current trends of fragmentation; while large dams get most of the attention, it is the smaller barriers that do most of the damage.
