The Legacy of the Enlightenment

11 December 2015

Dr Richard Wendorf
Director of the American Museum, Bath
Visiting Professor of Bath Spa University
The legacy of the Enlightenment remains a hotly contested issue. On the one hand, critics argue that we haven’t lived up to the ideals of Enlightenment thought: social and economic progress, tolerance and justice, industrial and scientific enterprise, religious scepticism, and democratic governance. On the other, critics argue that many of these goals were misguided in the first place and have little value in our complex, globalised world. In the final lecture in our BRLSI series, Richard Wendorf will adjudicate this debate.
