From humble beginnings, Hannah More rose to become one of the prime movers of her age. David Garrick regarded her as a surrogate daughter, and Elizabeth Montagu ‘Queen of the Bluestockings’ as her protégé.
Dr Johnson called her ‘the most skilled versificatrix in the English language’ and the painter Richard Samuel depicted her as one of the ‘Nine Living Muses of Great Britain’.
With William Wilberforce, her close friend, she was involved in the anti-slavery campaigns and the political debates sparked by the French Revolution.7:30pm
