Clifford Ellis (1907-1985) and his wife Rosemary worked as partners, designing posters and book jackets. Clifford was also Head of Bath School of Art, which moved to Corsham Court after the Bath Blitz in 1942 and was renamed Bath Academy of Art. The horrific aftermath of the bombing in Bath was recorded by Rosemary Ellis.
The lecture will illustrate many of the gems of the Ellis family archive that was given to the Victoria Art Gallery in 2016. This includes prints and watercolours by Howard Hodgkin and Williams Scott, letters from Peter Lanyon and Walter Sickert, the wartime diary of Rosemary Ellis, and book cover artwork for the iconic Collins New Naturalist series.
