If Artificial Intelligence were to land on our planet, it would find a society that progresses in terms of life expectancy and the eradication of poverty and famine, but is also fraught with contradictions and inequality, with unsustainable production and consumption patterns as well as deteriorating social relationships. Will AI exacerbate the contradictions of modern society? Or can AI help us build a better world? In this, the first of a series of talks on what AI and robotics means for us all, Dr Wortham asks if robots might be our new best friends.
