Virginia Woolf considered To the Lighthouse to be her best book.  It is also the most autobiographical, providing insights into her family life especially the impact of her parents’ ideas about gender roles.  By writing To the Lighthouse, she sought to ‘kill ‘the angel in the house’ and to free herself to write creatively.

This session will be led by Betty Suchar (BRLSI convenor, Literature and Humanities) – there will be an introduction to the book followed by an informal discussion.

Here’s a few things to think about while you’re reading:

1: What is the significance of the book’s title, To the Lighthouse?

2: How was the Ramsay family a typical Victorian one?

3: What is the role of Lily Briscoe in the novel?

4: Is the three-part structure effective?

5: What did Virginia Woolf find ‘out of date’?

Big Read is FREE to BRLSI members – if you’d like to become a member of BRLSI and get cheaper tickets to all of our talks plus other member benefits, go to our Membership page.
