LUNCH-TIME LECTURE SERIES This new series was arranged to provide meetings during the day for those unable to attend the evening meetings at the Institution. The lectures were held at the Bath & County Club, Queen Square and were preceded by a buffet lunch. MRS GASKELL: "WIVES AND DAUGHTERS"Rosemary Marshall, President of the local branch of the Gaskell Society, on 14 October 1999 This book has recently been the subject of a BBC TV serial. The speaker spoke about the life and works of this Victorian novelist, Elizabeth Gaskell, and explained the effect on her as a novelist of her role as the wife of a church minister in Manchester in the mid-19th century. She used several quotations from Mrs Gaskell's novels to illustrate her talk. Jean Brushfield |
