DEMONSTRATIONS

Demonstrations, particularly aimed at children, are held on selected Sunday afternoons.

THE LIQUID NITROGEN SHOW

Dr Peter Ford, University of Bath, on 4 February 2001

This popular show always attracts a large audience of 8- to 80-year olds. The effect of the low temperature on many substances is remembered for a long time: bananas that can be used as hammers seem to be a favourite.

THE STATIC ELECTRICITY SHOW

Art Fortgan, City of Bath College, on 11 February 2001

Art Fortgan found that a wet day in England was not as conducive to a demonstration of static electricity as the Californian weather he was used to. He is on a teacher exchange programme. But, with perseverance, he managed to show an enthusiastic audience some interesting phenomena and to get them to carry out various procedures for themselves. Using a wide range of materials he explained the theory and the nature of static electricity as well as impressing the audience with the experiments.

MATHEMATICAL MAGIC

Professor Chris Budd, University of Bath, on 4 March 2001

Assisted by his daughter, Chris Budd showed how maths could be fun. Having demonstrated a procedure he then explained why it produced the result.
